The Cranberries, “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee 25th Anniversary”

25 anni fa, i Cranberries pubblicarono il loro quinto album Wake Up And Smell the Coffee che sarà ripubblicato il 29 gennaio 2027 in numerose versioni, fra cui le Deluxe Edition ampliate: triplo LP, doppio CD, LP colorato, LP nero, CD e LP ‘liquid’.

I contenuti extra delle versioni deluxe includono B-side, canzoni live inedite registrate al Vicar Street di Dublino, nuovi mix stereo 2026 realizzati dal produttore Stephen Street, note di copertina ampliate ed una retrospettiva traccia-per-traccia curata dalla band.

L’album fu registrato subito dopo aver completato un tour di 110 date a supporto del precedente Bury The Hatchet.

La band scelse quindi di entrare subito in studio anziché prendersi una pausa. “Spesso alla fine di un tour ti senti esausto, ma qui avvenne esattamente il contrario; eravamo in fermento e volevamo catturare quell’energia e quell’unità in studio”, dice il chitarrista Noel Hogan.

Il disco fu lodato da All Music Guide (“Richiama il loro esordio quanto qualsiasi altra cosa abbiano fatto da allora”) e descritto da Hot Press come “di sicuro il loro miglior lavoro in sette anni”; riunì la band con il produttore Stephen Street, che contribuì a portare i Cranberries alla fama internazionale con i loro primi due album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? e No Need To Argue. “Abbiamo semplicemente ripreso da dove avevamo lasciato, il che è stato meraviglioso”, dice Street. “Nel caso di Dolores [O’Riordan], non c’era dubbio che fosse diventata una star: nel primo album era una ragazza estremamente timida di Limerick che non sapeva molto del mondo, ma ora era decisamente più sicura di sé. Era però ancora la Dolores che conoscevo e che ho amato fin dai primi giorni.”

Trainato dai singoli “Analyse” e “Time Is Ticking Out”, Wake Up And Smell The Coffee segnò un’evoluzione del sound della band, come osservò anche Rolling Stone: “anche se il loro suono stava diventando più tagliente e punk, i Cranberries non hanno mai perso la loro fanbase”. Il batterista Fergal Lawler conferma: “Creativamente, Dolores era in grande forma.” In un documentario sul “making of”, Dolores ha affermato: “Molte di queste canzoni parlano in profondità, di cose a cui non pensi mai quando sei adolescente, e fai festa tutto il tempo e  non ti preoccupi molto del pianeta – o almeno io non lo facevo. Vivevo il momento, ma poi crescendo diventi più responsabile e consapevole dei problemi”.

Wake Up And Smell The Coffee (25^° Anniversario) sarà pubblicato in diversi formati con materiale extra, incluso un LP stampato in Tiratura Limitata su vinile ‘coffe liquid-filled’ (con un adesivo profumato di caffè scratch & sniff). Il vinile nero 3LP e l’edizione 2CD sono ricchi di contenuti extra, tra cui B-side, brani live inediti registrati al Vicar Street di Dublino, nuovi mix stereo 2026 del produttore Stephen Street, la bellissima traccia “7 Years” e note di copertina ampliate che includono nuove foto e una retrospettiva traccia-per-traccia della band. Fra gli altri formati che saranno pubblicati vi sono una Edizione Limitata su LP colorato ‘Skyburst Blue’, l’LP in vinile nero, CD e Digital Deluxe Edition (include tutte le 36 tracce).
